An update after the first round of playoff games

With eight fewer teams in contention after the first round of the WED playoffs, it’s time for the first update to the Prestige Possibilities of Season 20.

The Double

…aka the Fred

The first part of this series gave us a list of 19 players who could look to the Double. This list, now, gets slimmer. I’ll go through the results of the series and review their impact.

  • After a 2–0 victory by Darba over Crispy Bacon, both candidates in the series — Darba and Harbinger — remain in contention.
  • With Severe’s team winning against Joll’s, LukeSkyFAKER remains on the list, while Kuroame becomes the first to drop from it.
  • A 2–0 victory against Barg’s team means Kimer’s team still has two players who can claim the double, namely Boelens and ColNilsOlav, while Waloo and PONPO drop.
  • Kalisdar’s team upset Holy Harry’s with a 2–1 win, meaning that both candidates in this series — Kalisdar and Acid — stay in.
  • Against all odds, Grimmjow stays on the list after Reddydas’ team swept Gonzo’s.
  • After a comeback that saw Debowy’s team win the last two games in the series against my team, hi5 and Debowy stay on, while bitch im a cow and myself are shown the door.
  • In an expected 2–0 against Stl, Play stays put on the list.
  • Due to a 1–2 loss against Gains’ team, we unfortunately see Laavi, Mikel and Maus all leave contention.

This leaves us with a new list consisting of a bit above half the original players — the following 11 players can still win the double:

  • Darba (Darba/Play)
  • Harbinger (Darba/Harbinger)
  • Play (Play/Play)
  • Boelens (Kimer/Madsen)
  • ColNilsOlav (Kimer/Madsen)
  • Debowy (Debowy/Kevin Richardson)
  • hi5 (Debowy/hi5)
  • LukeSkyFAKER (Severe/Harbinger)
  • Kalisdar (Kalisdar/Kevin Richardson)
  • Acid (Kalisdar/Grimmjow)
  • Grimmjow (Reddydas/Grimmjow)

This, unfortunately, means that the following 8 players no longer have a chance to achieve this feat:

  • Laavi (Laavi/hi5)
  • Mikel (Laavi/T-Reds)
  • Maus (Laavi/Maus)
  • Kuroame (Joll/Maus)
  • Waloo (Barg/Maus)
  • PONPO (Barg/T-Reds)
  • Madsen (Madsen/Madsen)
  • bitch im a cow (Madsen/hi5)

Best of luck to all 19 in their SUN playoffs.

All of the players I previously pointed out as having the best chance at achieving the double (Darba, Play, Boelens, ColNilsOlav) remain in contention. Meanwhile, with myself out, Play becomes the only player who could potentially achieve the first-ever captain double.

The WED results also have implications on how the first round of SUN could affect this list:

  • Madsen — Harbinger: Either Boelens and NilsOlav, or Harbinger and LukeSkyFAKER remain.
  • hi5 — Grimmjow: Either hi5 or Acid and Grimmjow remain.
  • T-Reds — Maus: After the games on WED, no players who could win the double remain on either of these teams.
  • Kevin Richardson — Play: Either Kalisdar and Debowy, or Darba and Play remain.

The Back to Back

We went into the first playoff series’ of Season 20 with 9 players able to win the back to back. Although the chances for some players got slimmer with a loss on WED, only 2 players are out of contention completely:

  • Holy Harry (Holy Harry)
  • Mewes (Laavi)

This leaves us with 7 who can still accomplish the feat:

  • Harbinger (Darba/Harbinger), with two potential B2Bs: WED-WED and WED-SUN. Harbinger also retains the possibility of becoming the first player in RD2L history to win three seasons, back to back.
  • Mikel (T-Reds), with a potential B2B of WED-SUN.
  • STJ (Play), with a potential B2B of WED-SUN.
  • Boelens (Kimer/Madsen), with two potential B2Bs: WED-WED and WED-SUN.
  • Kimer (Kimer), with a potential B2B of SUN-WED.
  • bitch im a cow (hi5), with a potential B2B of SUN-SUN.
  • GrimR (Madsen), with a potential B2B of SUN-SUN.

This also halves the list of players who could achieve both the Double and the Back to Back in season 20 to just Harbinger and Boelens.

Looking now to SUN, the matchups which could further shorten the list are:

  • Kevin Richardson vs Play, where STJ could drop out.
  • Madsen vs Harbinger, where GrimR could drop out.
  • T-Reds vs Maus, where Mikel could drop out.
  • hi5 vs Grimmjow, where bitch im a cow could drop out.

Setting Records

I’ll keep this section fairly short, as our list has lost only one player.

After a loss to Kalisdar in WED, Holy Harry can no longer become a 4-time RD2L Champion.

This leaves 4 options:

  • Den’den
  • sbx320
  • Mikel
  • Harbinger

Additionally, the results of WED influence some of the spicier possibilities:

  1. While we could still see two quadruple champions in season 20, this would — with Harry out — hinge on the now slimmer chances of one of two options: Den’den winning WED while one of Mikel or Harbinger win SUN, OR sbx320 and Harbinger just winning WED. There is, then, also the possibility of sbx320 and Harbinger winning WED, while Mikel wins SUN, which would provide us with the title of first quadruple champion being shared by three players.
  2. As Mikel’s team lost on WED, Harbinger becomes the only player who could potentially become both the first quadruple and quintuple champion, if he wins the double.

My writing routine, more often than not, is to take a walk and grab a coffee somewhere. If you want to support my content, you can buy me one of those, but I’ll keep writing as long as there’s stuff to write about, no matter what. All tips go, in one way or another, back into the process of content creation — July’s tip jar will go to equipment that’d allow me to start exploring streams and video as new content ventures.

Thanks for reading!
