I get shit talked for my power rankings a lot, which, don’t get me wrong, makes sense, because I’m usually the only one to do them…except this time Polarbear did an amazing job and gathered up multiple people to do power rankings for most of the divisions, so we have something to compare my rankings to. Admittedly, that’s just a cheap excuse to look back at the season and compare general sentiment around the league to the end result (and maybe ease back into writing a bit — maybe.)
A short disclaimer before I get into it: excluding myself, only Maus did power rankings for Div 5, and no one wrote any for Div 4. Also, in terms of Polar’s collated rankings, I think I’ve included all except Nappa’s, since he excluded his own team so it’d all be a bit shifted around, and have included Polarbear’s meme ranking for Div 3.
Additionally, for the sheet I used to track all of this:
- Green indicates a correct rank (or ranking range) prediction — for example, a team was ranked 4th and finished 4th, or a team was ranked 7th and finished 7–8.
- Red indicates an incorrect rank prediction where the team was ranked too high — for example, a team was ranked 2nd and finished 4th, or a team was ranked 5th but finished 7–8.
- Orange indicates an incorrect rank prediction where the team was ranked too low — for example, a team was ranked 7th but finished 5–6, or a team was ranked 5 but finished 3rd.
Maus was the only other person to do rankings for Div 5, and managed to slightly outdo me there. The only similarities between our rankings were first and last place, and where Owl’s 7–8th placement got us both points, OLW and his team finished 3rd rather than 1st.
Maus also correctly predicted Nonesk and Moyo to finish 5th and 6th respectively, whereas I predicted Nonesk to do better and Moyo to do worse. Blank’s finals win did get me a second correct prediction, and in general I did a better job of spotting the top teams, since my top 3 ended up top 3…just not fully in the order I expected, whereas Maus got 3 of 4 bottom teams on the nose. My rankings would’ve looked a lot better if Greggy’s team didn’t throw against Moyo, but it is what it is — I’m sure that hurt them a lot more than it does me.
I was unfortunately the only one to do power rankings for Division 4, and the results were, uh, interesting.
Since I was the only one to do predictions for this div, I’ve decided against waiting for the finals to finish and just bask in the hype with everyone else. To be fair, this ranking isn’t a disaster…for the most part. The rough bit is that my 1st and 8th ranked team are essentially inverted; I’ll be honest and say I didn’t exactly believe in the Laavi team since I didn’t see the personalities and roles lining up to form a top team, but it’s fairly evident that I was pretty damn wrong about that. On the other hand, I may have given Luke’s team a bit too much credit and given them higher expectations than may have been warranted based on main season performance.
The two correct predictions I got with KCC at 7–8 and Reddydas at 5–6 are about par for the course considering all the other power rankings across the mini, but my final tally hinges on tonight’s result. If Laavi’s team manages to win, Maus’ 2nd place finish would bring me up to 3 correct predictions; otherwise I’d stay at two. Best of luck to both teams! But, like, slightly more luck to Laavi’s team.
With Div 3 we get into the meat and potatoes of the piece, with 9 power rankings for the division (8 if you exclude Polarbear’s meme rankings — which I describe as such because they feature Bench in at 5th), including Denden, Cloud, Poly, Valchers, Stl, Syrphx, Bernard, Polarbear and myself. Unsurprisingly, most everyone got a freebie with putting Bench last here, and 6 rankings — including mine — also correctly predicted a 7–8th place finish for DisturbedJawker.
This is also the division with the closest predictions, as both Poly and myself managed to get a record 4 correct predicted placements, with Valchers, Syrphx and Bernard getting 3 each as well. Denden, Stl and surprisingly enough, Polar’s slightly memeier list all featured 2 correct predictions, with Cloud being the only to get just a single prediction right (which was a freebie anyway, so, uh, kinda rough). Although I’m tied with Poly at 4, he was definitely much closer overall, getting the entire bottom 4 correct and just barely missing the mark on most of the top 4 as a result.
Perhaps the most notable part of all of these rankings is the underperformers, though — Valchers was predicted to have a top 2 finish 5 times, and ssd was seen as a top 2 team by 6 separate writers, but with both finishing 5–6th, the bottom of the rankings are very red all across the board — in fact, the only list to not see a fully red top 2 was Denden’s, as he correctly predicted his own team to come in second.
I’ll be honest in saying that I do think a lot of the writers, myself included, would likely have predicted a better finish for Legitsplit if his team had LPSD from the start, but I’m unsure anyone would’ve had them in at first even then.
Perhaps the hardest to predict division featured 8 power ranking lists (excluding Nappa’s incomplete rankings), created by Waloo, Muffinsan, Haraway, Dildawg, Maslyy, Darba, Kuroame and myself. There’s very little green to go around here, with many over and underperformers all across the board, both in terms of mini performance and in rankings prowess — div 2 features the first of two rankings with 0 correct placements, courtesy of Waloo.
This one’s truly all over the place. The most anyone got right was 2 correct placements, a “feat” achieved by only Dildawg and myself, with Muffinsan, Haraway, Masly, Darba and Kuroame getting only 1 right, and poor Waloo getting 0. Funnily enough, if my team had lost the finals, Darba would’ve also had 0 correct predictions, and I would’ve had 3, but I’ll gladly take winning the event over winning the ranking battle.
There’s definitely a lot to talk about in this one; Haraway and Waloo underperforming did a number on most of the rankings, as did Dan and Steg overperforming. The highest anyone had Dan was 2nd by Darba, and Steg’s highest placement was 4th by teammate Dildawg. On the flip side, no one had Waloo lower than 4th, whereas only 2 people somehow predicted Debowy to have a bottom 2 finish — with rankings like Darba’s putting them as high as 3rd! Admittedly, it’s hard to be particularly critical in this division, since I think it was for the most part pretty well matched, and even after having won it, I can’t help but feel most teams could take games off each other. Definitely one of the more interesting Mini divisions in recent memory.
Div 1 might have had fewer power rankings, but it brings the fun nonetheless. Szajtek bears the dubious honor of being the creator of the only other ranking list to have 0 correct predictions, skipping over the freebie of putting the Maus/Sky team in 7–8th as all other writers did. Div 1 also featured multiple teams falling apart before they really got the ball rolling, so most writers were looking at about 2 correct predictions, give or take.
I managed to get the most correct predictions with 3, though it was fairly close — if Shift had lost to Nsphere in the finals, I’d be tied at 2 with Harb, Severe and Nsphere, but the actual result meant my prediction of the Nsphere-captained, Denden-drafted team finishing 2nd came to fruition.
Three finishes stand out as being fairly notable, at least in terms of what they did for the rankings. The Szajtek team was ranked as bottom 2 by everyone except the captain, who gave his team the benefit of the doubt and…predicted them to finish 6th. Notable underperforms include the disasterously mismatched Play team, who with all their internal struggles finished as a bottom 2 team, despite multiple top 2 predictions, as well as the Neox team, whom only Harb (correctly, might I add) predicted to finish outside of the top 2.
It’s pretty funny — for all the people shittalking my rankings, you wouldn’t expect me to be either first or tied first on number of correct predictions across the top 3 divisions, but here we are. Just wish I ranked myself first — fucking Waloo always baits me.
Jokes aside, this was a fun way to look back at the season, and I’ll be honest in saying I thoroughly enjoyed reading other people’s rankings for once. This was a really interesting mini season in many ways.
Thanks for reading!
Is this a return from my hiatus? I don’t know. Maybe? Maybe not. There’s still some burnout left there, even a month on, and most of the same things I wrote about in terms of my relationship to content remain largely the same, so I can’t exactly guarantee anything. I’m looking at options to branch out and write different things to make the whole thing a more sustainable venture since it does soak up a lot of time, but for the time being, I’ll just write when I have something to write about. Oh, and, if you want to support my content, you can buy me a coffee.
